Listen: Smaller ice glaciers
The world’s glaciers may contain less ice than previous measurements have shown. This is the opinion of researchers in a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
This can affect the supply of fresh water for people living in areas around the glaciers, but also an increase in sea level.
The glaciers on the Andes mountain range had almost 30 percent less ice than in previous calculations, but the Himalayan glaciers had almost 40 percent more ice, according to the study. According to the report, however, the amount of ice in total is less than previously thought.
