Human Rights Watch demands new trial over Catalan murder – News (Echo)

Listen: HRW and Catalan DE month APP

  • The human rights organization Human Rights Watch believes that the verdict against those behind the murders of Zaida Catalan and the American Michael Sharp does not reflect the whole truth. In particular, it failed to investigate the role of Congolese officials in planning.

  • “For four years, the prosecution has consistently blamed everything on militiamen, without really showing who was really behind the murders,” said Thomas Fessy of Human Rights Watch.

  • Human Rights Watch therefore urges the United States and Sweden to push for the UN to open up an international, credible process for seeking the truth behind the murders.
