Pence rejects Trump’s claim that he could have changed the election

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Friday rejected Donald Trump’s false claims that he could have changed the election in Trump’s favor.

Former Vice President Mike Pence rejects Donald Trump’s claim that he could have changed the election and prevented Joe Biden from becoming president.

In a speech for someone in Florida on Friday, Pence addressed the former president’s increasingly intense claims that he could have prevented Joe Biden from becoming president.

– President Trump is wrong. I had no authority to change the election result, Pence said.

Pence has previously defended his actions on January 6, saying that he and Trump will hardly ever agree on what happened that day. Friday’s comment was the most direct rejection he has ever made of Trump’s claim.

Earlier this week, Trump said the committee investigating his role in the storming of Congress should rather investigate why “Mike Pence did not send the votes back to be reversed or approved.” And on Sunday, he again condemned Pence and said he could have changed the election.

According to the Constitution, the role of the Vice President in the counting of voters’ votes is solely ceremonial. He or she has no authority to intervene in the count.

Pence was inside the building and led the joint session of the congress to confirm the presidential election, when the violent mob with, among others, Trump’s supporters attacked police officers and hunted for congressional representatives and senators.

Pence, who earlier in the day had issued a statement to make it clear that he had no authority to overthrow the will of the electorate, was taken to safety by his bodyguards when some of the attackers shouted “Hang Mike Pence!”

Pence currently seems to be laying the groundwork for a possible election campaign to become the Republican presidential candidate in what could be direct competition with Trump, if both choose to stand for election.
