Eight-year-old smuggled his own book into the library shelf – became a successful author

– I had to sneak past the librarians, says Dillon Helbig to the local press.

The eight-year-old from the US state of Idaho has become a talking point and a sought-after author.

Before Christmas, Dillon wrote a book about Christmas and time travel, with herself in the lead role. The book is 88 pages long and contains a number of colorful drawings.

Dillon had no distributor. Therefore, he hid his book on the shelf at the local the library.

– It was done sloppily, says a laughing library manager, Alex Hartman according to Washington Post.

The book was still too special for the library to get rid of. They thus chose to enroll her in their loan system.

Long waiting list

In the weeks that followed, the rumor spread. The book quickly became a local hit, and several signed up on the waiting list to read the work for the eight-year-old.

At the end of January, as many as 56 people had registered an interest. This corresponds to a waiting list of more than four years, according to New York Times.

After several media have mentioned the trick, the interest in the book has become even greater.

Epic Christmas story

In the book, Dillon travels through time and space after the star at the top of the Christmas tree explodes.

History takes him back to 1621 and the first American Thanksgiving feast. Dillon had the year confirmed by his mother.

Dillon also meets Santa Claus.

– His imagination is incredible, says mother Susan Helbig.

She tells me that Dillon has been making comic book stories since he was five years old.

Hartman says he read the book to his six-year-old son, who thought it was the funniest book ever.

In the book, the main character Dillon gets several challenges. Among other things, he ends up in the stomach of a turkey.

Inspires others

Following the book release and the local media coverage, other children have been inspired to write their own stories.

Several of my classmates have praised the budding author.

– They said it was very cool. That they wish they were me, says Dillon himself.

Dillon’s book now has a permanent place in the section of the library for comics. He has received an award created by the library for the court.

Dillon also shares the good news that a sequel to the Christmas saga is on its way. He is also working on a book about a closet like a jacket.

– I will stop writing books when I am 40, says the eight-year-old.

– And then?

– Then I’ll make games.
