25 minutes before the biathletes’ first press conference in China, the Olympic Summit sent out an urgent message:

Johannes Thingnes Bø and Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold were forced to withdraw from the meeting with the press. Both are suspected close contacts after the flight from Oslo to Beijing.

Suddenly, the press conference took on a more dramatic undertone.

Tarjei Bø arrived at the press center without her brother at 12.56 Chinese time. By his side sat Tiril Eckhoff, World Cup leader Marte Olsbu Røiseland and Norway’s Olympic doctor, Ola Berger.

– We were informed this morning that Johannes and Ingrid are in a possible close contact situation. The situation has not been clarified. We work with that in the health team. For now, that means they can train and compete, but they have to eat in the room, says the doctor.

– People sitting next to you, two rows in front or behind, if any of them test positive, you are defined as close contact. We are now waiting for an answer to test number two from the one who had a positive test, Berger explains.

Thingnes Bø is the pre-favorite to become one of the great Olympic kings – if he stays healthy.

The U.S. Bureau of Statistics Gracenote recently published an analysis where they came to the conclusion that Thingnes Bø is the favorite to take four golds.

Should Thingnes Bø and Landmark Tandevold gain status as close contacts, it will probably not have serious consequences for the athletes. They can train as normal and prepare for the start of the Olympics as long as they give negative tests and keep two meters away. Close contacts in the Olympics are tested twice every day and must be eaten in a separate room.

Previously, the combined trio Jarl Magnus Riiber, Espen Andersen and Espen Bjørnstad have been defined as close contacts by Estonia’s corona-infected athlete Kristjan Ilves. It also happened on the flight to the Olympics.
