Two in the support apparatus tested positive – no Norwegian practitioners close contacts

BEIJING / OSLO (VG) Two members of the Norwegian Olympic squad’s support staff tested positive for corona on arrival in China. They took the same plane as a number of athletes, but none of the athletes should be defined as close contacts.

DESTINATION BEIJING: The charter flight with several Norwegian athletes, support staff and journalists on their way to Beijing on Monday night.

This is confirmed by the Olympic Summit.

“Both have recently had COVID infection. The two will now be tested again, to possibly confirm the first positive test. If these tests are also positive, isolation awaits “, the press release states.

Several Norwegian Olympic athletes were on the same flight to Beijing, but no one should be defined as close contacts, writes Olympiatoppen. Among others, the Norwegian cross-country masters, a number of biathletes, jumpers and combined athletes from the Norwegian Olympic squad were on the trip.

ON THE PLANE: Johannes Høsflot Klæbo was on Monday’s flight to China.

Winter sports manager Helge Bartnes confirms the infection to VG.

– We were a little prepared for it to happen since there was an infection on the first plane. It is not surprising, but it is something we hoped to avoid, he says.

The plane took off from Oslo on Monday night. There were also practitioners from Denmark, Estonia and Sweden. Among others, Denmark’s national ice hockey team participated. Eight positive cases were detected in their squad on 24 January.

– We are awaiting test results and can therefore not confirm whether we have infected in the Danish delegation, says Denmark’s press manager, Jakob Draminsky, to VG.

Lars Markusson is press manager for the Swedish Olympic squad. He informs VG that no positive tests have been reported among their passengers on the charter plane that landed in Beijing on Tuesday afternoon.

Everyone on board the plane took quick tests on departure from Gardermoen. The passengers were tested in the nose and throat.

Everyone who tests positive at the airport in Beijing is routinely driven to an isolation hotel.

Alpinisten’s sports director Claus Ryste confirms that the technical drivers for women and men – ie slalom and the giant slalom team – were on board the plane. With the exception of Henrik Kristoffersen and reigning slalom world champion Sebastian Foss Solevåg. The duo travels later than the rest.

– All our athletes have tested negative, says Ryste.

Aasne Hoksrud is a doctor for the Norwegian Olympic team, and has worked with the Chinese authorities to free three infected Norwegians from isolation. The infection was detected on Friday, but all are now looking for them to succeed in getting three negative tests from each.

They are now defined as close contacts. This means that they can do their job, but must keep two meters away, wear a bandage and stay in the room if they feel symptoms.

– We have challenges with the flow of communication with the authorities. It has not been completely up and running yet, but we expect it to be in place, Hoksrud told VG on Saturday.

She explained that a medical panel consisting of members of the Chinese government, the International Olympic Committee and various national federations will consider individual cases.

– The medical panel will have a professional discussion on difficult cases. So we are optimistic. But for now, they are treated as positive, with all the consequences it entails, said Norway’s Olympic doctor.

The isolation hotel is adjacent to Zhangjiakou and Yanqing, which are two of the three Olympic cities in China.
