New car sales January 2022: Now Porsche sells more than all petrol cars in Norway combined

As many as 9 out of 10 new car registrations in January were passenger cars with cables. Pure electric cars accounted for 83.7 per cent, while rechargeable hybrids accounted for 6.8 per cent of total new car sales.

It shows very recent figures from the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

A total of 7,957 new passenger cars were registered in Norway in January. This is a decrease of 22.8 per cent compared with the same period in 2021.

With the exception of electric cars, there are falls in all drivelines: petrol, diesel and hybrids.

Top 20: Only one that is not an electric car

– That very many new rechargeable hybrids were registered before the turn of the year, explains a low registration number for this type in January. The numbers now are special anyway, pointing in many directions and heralding an exciting car year. That as many as 19 of the top 20 first-time registered new passenger cars in January are electric cars is completely unique, says director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen of the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

The only one on the “Top 20” list that is not an electric car is Toyota’s RAV4.

– New car registrations in January show that Norway is still a different country in the electric car context, even though more and more countries are experiencing increased electric car sales. But no other country can point to such a brand and model distribution in the Top 20 in a month. The six best-selling new cars did not exist in Norway a year ago, says Solberg Thorsen further, and believes this shows that Norwegian new car buyers are very keen to buy the very latest – a bit in the same way as with mobile phones.

The way we buy a new car is also about to change radically. Many people order and shop online before the new car is picked up at a dealer.

– Many do not test drive the new car once, as they always did before. Nobody had thought so a few years ago, says Solberg Thorsen.

More electric Porsches than petrol cars

Sales of pure petrol and diesel cars have been declining for a long time, and of 7,957 first-time registered new passenger cars in January, only 387 petrol and diesel cars.

– That we should see more new Porsches registered than new petrol cars in a month, no one had seen coming. And in January, 181 of the electric car model Porsche Taycan were registered, while a total of 175 petrol cars were registered, says Solberg Thorsen.

He believes it shows that many Norwegians have a solid economy and can realize the image dream.
