– More than 100,000 Russian soldiers have been deployed at the Ukrainian border, and Russia is engaged in other destabilizing actions against Ukraine. There is a clear threat to international peace and the UN Charter, said US UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield in an announcement on Thursday.
She added that the 15 members of the Security Council “must examine the facts and discuss what is at stake for Ukraine, for Russia, for Europe and for the core duties and core principles of the international order on Russia go to further invasion”.
As one of the Security Council’s five permanent members, Russia has veto power over any resolution in the Council.
Thomas-Greenfield says that a meeting is nevertheless an opportunity to showcase Russia’s actions and isolate the Kremlin.
– I do not think any member of the Security Council will calm down with the situation and say it is okay for Russia to invade the borders of another country, she says.
