The company, the captain and one ship doctor are punished with fines, while the case is closed to others involved, the police say in a press release.
Hurtigruten’s MS Roald Amundsen was on two voyages from Tromsø and around Svalbard in July 2020. After arriving in Tromsø on Friday 31 July on the second voyage, coronary heart disease was detected among crew and passengers.
– The same weekend, the police started an investigation to see if Hurtigruten as a company, or people in the shipping company or on the ship, should have implemented measures to reduce the risk of further infection of the corona at call in Tromsø, says police attorney Lisa-Mari Ellingsen in Troms police district, who has led the investigation.
The police have investigated the case until now, to find out if anyone has done anything criminal
The police state that more than 30 interrogations have been carried out of almost 30 employees, passengers and others with information in the case.
In addition, they point out that they have reviewed extensive material with seized e-mails from Hurtigruten.
Documentation from FHI, UNN, the Norwegian Coastal Administration, Tromsø municipality, Hadsel municipality and Hurtigruten’s external investigation report is also included in the investigation material.
– The investigation has given us a good picture of the course of events, and we have received thorough assessments from maritime expertise in the Norwegian Maritime Directorate and medical expertise in the Norwegian Board of Health, says Acting State Attorney Jørn Bremnes at Troms and Finnmark State Attorney, who has prosecuted the case.
