Here, VW ID.Buzz is suddenly in the middle of Oslo city center

One of this year’s big car news comes from Volkswagen and is called ID.Buzz. And it’s a car we’ve been waiting a long time for. It is over 20 years since VW showed us the concept car Microbus / Bulli for the first time. Here, the legendary Hippie bus was to have a modern sequel and the interest was enormous.

Nevertheless, the project was eventually shelved. But Volkswagen’s extensive investment in electric cars has given the model a second chance. In 2017, we got to see the concept car ID.Buzz for the first time.

Now it is not long before the launch of this and the sister model ID.Buzz Cargo (which is the van version). But first, the car has been on a surprising trip to Norway.

We in Broom came across it at Barcode in central Oslo today.

We wrote this about Microbus 11 years ago

ID.Buzz Cargo is the name of the van version, it is produced side-by-side with the multi-purpose car at the factory in Germany.

Not exactly discreet

– Guess if it attracted attention! Of course, it also has a lot to do with camouflage. It is not exactly discreet, says Broom’s editor-in-chief Vegard Møller Johnsen.

– It looks like the van version?

– We did not see much of the interior, but it’s probably ID.Buzz Cargo, this. I got a quick look at the dashboard, and there it looks like VW uses the same screen solution as on ID.4. A center screen and a smaller one above the steering wheel, Vegard says.

The front is clearly the most distinctive part of this design.

The front creates the distinctive character

– What is your first impression otherwise?

– It looks smaller and a little more compact than I had expected from all the pictures in advance. This is obviously the short version, the car also comes in a long version. But at the same time, the wheelbase is solid. The front is what creates the distinctive character here, including the sloping side window in front which has a fairly significant retro factor. The rest of the design is pretty boxy. But this must also be the case when it is to be sold both as a multi-purpose car and van – and a lot of interior space is important.

Vegard also received confirmation that the official premiere is March 9. Then we will also get prices and technical information about the car. According to the plan, the first Norwegian customers will get their cars over the summer.

No – this is not just an old people carrier

This is what the concept version looks like, it has attracted a lot of attention.

Family car that stands out

The first copies of the car have now rolled out from the factory in Germany. Like the rest of the ID family, Buzz will be built on the MEB platform from Volkswagen.

In recent years, we have had several photo drops on the car. Completely flat floor makes it easy to combine smart and practical solutions. Here, it will apparently be seats that can be moved around and also taken out, in addition to flexible table solutions and possible to make beds.

A caravan version in a good VW tradition is probably not unthinkable either.

This was the end of VW’s retro car

The multi-purpose cars have lost a lot of sales in recent years. With ID.Buzz, Volkswagen hopes to reverse that trend.

Take over for more cars

From what we experience will ID. Buzz come in two varieties. A four-wheel drive version with 369 horsepower and a battery of 111 kWt. And in a cheaper variant with rear-wheel drive and a slightly smaller battery of 84 kWt. On the latter, the power will be 286 horsepower.

Rear-wheel drive should be first out, it is unclear how long after the version with 4×4 is. Here, there is also considerable uncertainty about production and sharing access right now. The international shortage of semiconductors is hurting many car manufacturers.

When ID. Buzz is getting ready for the market, it’s not just over 70 year old VW Type 2 it is meant to take over for. It is intended to be just as much a successor to the Touran and Sharan multi-purpose vehicles. Maybe it can also kick-start new life in the entire multi-purpose car class. It is needed, because this car class has suffered from declining sales and fewer and fewer models in recent years.
