The government is abolishing entry quarantines and changing requirements for infection quarantines for close contacts

From night to Wednesday, the current requirement for entry quarantine will be phased out, the Ministry of Health states. The quarantine for close contacts will also end.

Minister of Health and Care Services Ingvild Kjerkol (Labor Party).

The government is abolishing the requirement for entry quarantine from night to Wednesday. The reason is that it is no longer considered professionally necessary for infection control.

Today, persons who arrive in Norway from an area with a quarantine obligation, and can not document that they have been fully vaccinated or have undergone covid-19 with a valid corona certificate, must be in the quarantine entry.

In a press release, the Ministry of Health and Care Services writes that the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) has recommended this to the government. NIPH points out that travelers “without a corona certificate” make up 7 per cent of the registered travelers, and 4 per cent of cases of infection.

– I agree with FHI that the proportion of infected among immigrants without a corona certificate is so small related to the infection situation we have in Norway now, that the time has come to change the requirement for entry quarantine, says Minister of Health and Care Services Ingvild Kjerkol (Labor) in the press releases.

Close contacts do not need to be quarantined

The requirement for quarantine for close contacts also applies from night to Wednesday.

The regulation change applies from midnight, night until 26 January, the Ministry of Health and Care Services states in a press release.

– Very many are now in quarantine. The infection situation has led to a critical need to implement adjustments of both priorities and rules for test strategy, quarantine provisions and use of PCR capacity. It is urgent to switch to a test regime as a replacement for the quarantine, says Minister of Health and Care Services Ingvild Kjerkol (Labor).

Replaced with more testing

The infection quarantine of ten days can be replaced with:

  • Daily testing for five days after the last close contact for household members and similarly close.
  • Household members and similar relatives who cannot keep their distance from the infected person during the isolation period can replace the quarantine infection with daily testing for eleven days (six days during the infected person’s isolation period + five days after this). This also applies to children.
  • In addition to the test regimen, it is recommended to wear a sanitary napkin indoors in a public place and to avoid large gatherings and events for ten days after close contact. The recommendation to wear a face mask does not apply to children under 12 years of age, school children over 12 years of age when they are at school and those who for medical or other reasons cannot wear face masks.
  • Monitor for any symptoms during the entire period.
  • In case of symptoms, you should stay at home and get tested.

People who do not follow the test regime must be quarantined for ten days, with any testing out of the quarantine in the event of a negative test taken no earlier than seven days after the last close contact, the ministry writes.
