The record purchase pepped off the pitch – now Tottenham want to get rid of him

There were enormous expectations attached to Tanguy Ndombéle (25) after Tottenham broke their own transfer record to bring him to North London in the summer of 2019.

The Frenchman came from Lyon and reportedly cost about 580 million kroner plus clauses.

But the midfielder has by no means fulfilled, and failed to play into either Mauricio Pochettino, José Mourinho, substitute Ryan Mason, Nuno Espírito Santo or Antonio Conte’s favorite starting line-ups.

The ball genius has only in a flash shown what talent lives in him – as on this occasion against Sheffield United:

Pepet off the field

At home against Morecambe in the FA Cup on Sunday, he got a rare chance from the start. A golden opportunity to convince Conte that he deserves to play every weekend, but it all ended in misery.

After a desolate performance, Ndombélé was replaced twenty minutes before the end – at the position 1-0 to little Morecambe.

The Frenchman reacted by walking slower and slower off the field, as the pipe concert from the stands got louder and louder. Tottenham won the match 3-1 after goals from Harry Winks and substitutes Lucas Moura and Harry Kane turned the match around.

After the match, Conte did not want to say too much about Ndombélé’s performance and what happened at the change.

– I was so focused on the match because we were about to lose 0-1. You get such situations in football. You have to be good if you’re going to change people’s minds. It is normal for someone to be disappointed in you.

– I was also a player and it happened that someone was dissatisfied with my performance. That’s life. We have to keep working and do better next time, says the Italian according to the website

Both player and club will separate teams

But according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham want to get rid of the record purchase during this month.

– Tottenham are looking for an opportunity to sell or loan Tanguy Ndombélé in January. Rumors about Rome, but no talks so far.

– Spurs are also open to discuss barter with Ndombélé as part of the negotiations, Romano writes on Twitter.

After a very heavy start under Mourinho, Ndombélé gradually gained more confidence, and also played his best football in the Tottenham jersey under the Portuguese, who now leads Roma.

And The Athletic writes that the 25-year-old himself also wants away from Tottenham. Ndombélé allegedly wanted to leave already this summer, but there were no real alternatives.

The fat weekly salary of 2.4 million kroner helps to minimize the number of relevant clubs, and Athletic writes that a loan seems more likely precisely for that reason.
