On Sunday, a fire broke out in a block of flats in the Bronx in New York. At least 19 people were killed and 63 injured. Nine of the dead are children.

Taxi driver Stephan Beauvogui (50) lives in the apartment block. He is one of those who witnessed the tragic incident on Sunday, and who got away from the place in time.

– Several shouted for help, we could not get out, Beauvogui says on Sunday.

No fire escape

The 50-year-old lives on the fourth floor of the building, and has lived there for almost seven years with his family. On Sunday, they had to flee from the smoky apartment block.

He is desperate about the incident, and says that the situation could have ended fatally if he had not gotten out of the family on time.

– Look at the building. There are no fire ladders, Beauvogui said in despair to journalists present on Sunday.

Beauvogui says he had to use the stairs in the block as an escape route.

– It was difficult, because I could not see anything, he continues.

Because of the smoke?

– Yes, because of the smoke. And it was not small, it was very much. I took my wife’s hand and we found a way down.

“Dad, where are my friends?”

His six- and nine-year-old sons were also in the building. They are in good condition, but four of the neighbors’ children were sent to hospital.

The last he has heard is that one of them is dead.

Beauvogui bursts into tears.

– What should I tell my children now? Tomorrow they will ask me “Dad, where are my friends?”, He says.

The cause of the fire is clear

The fire alarm first went off on the third floor of the building, which has a total of 19 floors. According to investigators, the fire started on the second and third floors.

Dan Nigro, commissioner for the fire service, says that the fire originated in a broken heater. The door to the apartment where the fire occurred was left open, which led to both the fire and the smoke spreading upwards to the rest of the building.

The fire brigades who searched the building found dead people on every floor of the building, and many were not conscious due to cardiac arrest and lack of oxygen.

The news agency AP writes that several residents who were trapped in their apartments had to smash windows to get enough air. Several stuffed wet towels under their doors in an attempt to prevent the smoke from entering.

– One of the worst in modern times

The fire is the worst in over 30 years, writes NBC New York. The death toll is expected to rise.

Around 1 p.m. local time, two hours after the fire alarm went off, the fire was extinguished.

“This is going to be one of the worst fires we have seen in modern times in New York,” said Mayor Eric Adams at a news conference Sunday.

The last time a fire hit more people in New York was in March 1990 when an arson attack killed 87 people, also in the Bronx.
