Ødegaard and Arsenal on their heads out of the FA Cup

Nottingham Forest – Arsenal 1-0

Arsenal have been good in the Premier League lately, and have also reached the semi-finals of the League Cup. But on Sunday, Arsenal with Martin Ødegaard from the start were to get into trouble in the FA Cup away against Nottingham Forest.

Because it did not erupt in the same way against the Championship team as it has done in the series. Arsenal created almost no great chances, and Forest defended heroically.

After 83 minutes, it exploded on City Ground. Ryan Yates hit a perfect cross for Lewis Grabban, who headed in 1-0 for Nottingham Forest.

It was also the match’s only goal, and thus Arsenal are out already in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. The Gunners won the tournament in 2020.

– They won, they scored a goal and we did not. We were not good enough and we have to apologize for that. I do not want to use excuses, because I expect the team I take out to do better, and when that does not happen, you quit, says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

In the Nottingham Forest camp the atmosphere was good.

– This was good. We made a well-conducted match, and deserved it even though we did not have many chances, goal scorer Grabban told ITV.

Now another tough home game awaits in the FA Cup’s fourth round. Leicester come to visit.

– It will also be a tough match, and we must be at our best to move on, says the former Premier League striker.

Forest manager Steve Cooper was proud of the achievement.

– We deserved this. We met a very good team, but we had a plan. I am proud of my players, he says.

ITV expert Roy Keane was not gracious in his comments by Arsenal.

– Arsenal looks like Real Madrid, but they play like a public team, he said.

Frustrated after early change

Mikel Arteta was back on the coaching staff after being recently infected with the corona. He mustered a strong team, but saved like Aaron Ramsdale and Kieran Tierney.

Still, Arsenal struggled at City Ground, creating few chances against the Championshi team. Mikel Arteta was so unhappy that he replaced Nuno Tavares after 35 minutes in favor of Tierney.

The Portuguese was not cheerful, and threw off his gloves in frustration. He also did not want to talk to the coaching staff when he sat down on the bench.

But the London team did not look significantly better after the break. In fact, Eliteserien acquaintance Philip Zinckernagel, who took league gold with Bodø / Glimt in 2020, was close to sending Forest in the lead, but Bernd Leno stopped the Dane.

Forest were not far behind after the hour, when Manchester United loaner James Garner tested Leno on a free kick.

Marked with white suits

Arsenal be close to creating great chances, with Eddie Nketiah and co. failed to seize the opportunities.

Instead, it narrowed at the other end when Lewis Grabban sent Forest in front, and then a dozen fans stormed the pitch.

Arsenal called on hands in a situation in advance, but it was not qualified enough to blow on, the referee thought.

Grabban’s goal was also the match’s only goal.

The away team posed in all-white suits for the occasion as part of a campaign called “No More Red”. It was to mark the stabbing of young people in London. In 2021, 27 teenagers were killed by a knife in the English capital – the highest number since 2008.

Notingham Forest had a tough draw, and will meet Leicester at home in the FA Cup’s 4th round during the weekend of 4-7 February. Brendan Rodger’s men won the tournament last year.
