This is what the corona situation looks like in Europe

On the first day of Christmas, it became known that France has for the first time passed 100,000 infected people in one day.

104,611 new cases of infection were reported in the country on Saturday, after three days in a row with infection records.

Although as many as 76.5 percent of France’s population is fully vaccinated and almost 21 million of the country’s 67 million inhabitants have received a third dose, the country is now struggling with soaring infection rates.

It does not seem to turn around at first. It is expected that the infection will increase even more as a result of the omicron variant.

French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a government meeting where they will discuss new intervention measures to control the infection in the country.

Italy is also struggling

When the corona pandemic first broke out in Europe, Italy was one of the countries hardest hit. In November 2020, 41,000 cases of infection were registered as the highest.

For a long time, there was good control over coronary heart disease in the country. But after the omikron variant appeared in the popular holiday country, 44,600 new infections have been registered in the country on Christmas Eve.

As a result of the high infection rates, the Italian authorities have reintroduced mandatory bandages outdoors. There are also stricter requirements for the quality of the bandages. When the order will take effect is not yet known.

All nightclubs are closed all year round and it is forbidden to arrange any kind of New Year’s celebration outdoors.

The authorities also adjust down the length of how long the corona certificate is valid. The validity of the long-awaited certificate goes from nine months, to only six months after vaccination. Refreshment doses are valid for four months, compared to the current five.

Italians must use a corona passport for everything from going to museums to public transport. The authorities in the country are now announcing that they will deny unvaccinated access to coffee shops.

Far more people in the country are testing themselves now than before. On Christmas Eve alone, 900,000 tested for coronary heart disease. The health authorities in the country now estimate that one of three positive samples is the omicron variant.

Huge infection in the UK

Since the omicron variant entered the UK, there have been an enormous number of cases of infection in the country every day.

On Christmas Eve, the country registered 119,789 new infections. This is the highest number so far in the pandemic.

On the same day, 147 new deaths were registered in connection with the coronavirus.

The day before, 106,000 new infections and 140 deaths were registered. On the same day last week, there were just over 88,000 new infections and 146 dead.

In the last week, the number of infected people has increased by 53 percent.

The health authorities in the country estimate that 1.4 million people were infected with the coronavirus last week. This is equivalent to one in 45 people in the UK.

Although there are very high infection rates in the country, the health authorities will not introduce new restrictions. The Minister of Health points to two recent studies that say that there is a lower risk of becoming seriously ill with the omicron variant.

Spain also has a new top listing

Spain was also among the countries that struggled with very high infection rates and deaths in the spring of 2020 when the corona pandemic really hit Europe.

Very high infection rates have now been registered in Spain.

On December 22, it became clear that almost 50,000 new infections had been registered in the country. It is a new record.

The current record is 49,823 cases of infection in one day. The previous record was 44,357 infected and is from January this year.

At the same time, the health authorities state that 421 infections per 100,000 have now been registered. This is an increase from the week before when there were 377 infected per 100,000.

The omicron variant accounts for as much as 80 percent of all those infected in the Spanish capital Madrid.

Neither the Spanish authorities nor the Madrid authorities are willing to introduce new measures to stop the spread of the infection. Only Catalonia has stepped in to close the nightlife. The city of Barcelona is located in Catalonia and is thus covered by the intervention measures.

Neighboring countries are struggling with infection rates

In Sweden, it was decided on 21 December that everyone who can should work from a home office. It was decided despite the fact that Sweden has among the lowest infection rates in Europe. An increase of 37 percent was registered when the new measures were introduced.

So far in the pandemic, 1.3 million infected people have been registered in Sweden. 15,206 people have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus in the country. This corresponds to 1492 deaths per 1 million inhabitants.

In comparison, Norway has 220 deaths per 1 million inhabitants.

The order for a home office comes as a measure against slowing down the omicron infection in the country.

– Now the spread of infection is increasing rapidly, and we see a greater burden on the health care system. The spread of the new omicron variant is worrying, said Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.

In addition to the home office, corona passes are required at all events with more than 500 people. At indoor events with more than 20 participants, all participants must sit.

The new measures came into force on Christmas Eve.

In Denmark, a new record was set on 19 December among infected children aged six to eleven. At that time, 2679 new infected people were registered in this age group.

A new infection record was set for the whole of Denmark on 21 December with 13,558 new cases of infection. However, this is about to flatten out. The very next day, 13,386 new infections were registered.

The Minister of Health in Denmark Magnus Heunicke believes that the high cases of infection are linked to the omicron variant.

A decline in admissions to the country has also been reported. On Wednesday 22 December, 553 patients were registered at Danish hospitals. That is one less than the day before, but a decrease of 27 people from Monday 20 December.

Not just shutdown

Not all countries are closing down as a result of high infection rates.

In Austria, the authorities were finally able to reopen the country on 20 December as a result of a low spread of infection. The country could then report 1,800 new infections, which was the lowest number the country had registered since October.

The country had then been completely shut down since the end of November when they registered 13,000 cases of infection daily.

On 12 December, however, the country reopened to the vaccinated inhabitants. Then the first regions could reopen the hotels and restaurants.

On December 20, the whole country could reopen. Then, among other things, Vienna could reopen. The country, on the other hand, is still completely closed to the unvaccinated.

To enter the country, visitors must show proof of vaccination or present a negative test. To be registered as fully vaccinated in the country, you must have received three vaccine doses.
