Tuesday’s gigantic loss cover from Jan Nepomnyashchy sent Magnus Carlsen a big step closer to his fifth World Cup title.
That Wednesday’s game ended in a draw is thus good news for the Norwegian, who now leads 6.5 -3.5 in total when 10 of 14 games have been played.
Carlsen played with white pieces, and the draw was a fact after 41 moves.
– It is nice. One step closer, Carlsens told NRK after the party, where several changes were made by officers.
After 40 moves with an even position, the two agreed on a draw.
– At one point I felt that I was a little better, but I could not get anything out of it. The idea was always that the draw is half a point closer to the title, Carlsen told NRK.
The Russian must thus win three of the four remaining games if he is to prevent Carlsen from once again becoming world champion. It is an almost impossible task.
