Forest and mountains in Härjedalen.

Listen: Fjällskogsskydd is slimmed down in a government agreement

  • The Forest Inquiry proposed that 500,000 hectares of mountains close to the mountains should receive formal protection – it is now reduced to 140,000 hectares in the agreement between the Center Party and the government.

  • The majority of the mountain forest is only protected if forest owners voluntarily agree to it, something the Center Party has pushed hard in the negotiations.

  • Sweden’s forests close to the mountains are rich in species and are considered to have extraordinary natural values, they are compared to the Amazon.
